So these are my thoughts on halo reach so far: To me it feels weirdly a lot like halo combat evolved. This initially threw me for a loop a bit (its been a really long time since I played competitive halo 1 for sure) but then after a few rounds everything seemed right again. Dual wielding (which threw off the game balance in halo 2 and was rendered totally unneccesary in halo 3) has been removed, and we are now back to only 2 grenade types, four total to carry.
The big change to the game is of course the load out abilities. Again I was initially skeptical but now I have completely changed my mind. This is going to sound weird, but this part of the game reminds me a lot of street fighter, and that is a very good thing. Let me explain: A central tenet of how street fighter works is each fighter can select an ultra combo from a list to use in a match (generally there are two or three to pick from for each warrior), and these moves, if used properly, can help a player adjust strategy or stage a comeback, oh and landing them makes you feel bad ass. Now how does this apply to reach? For starters the ability to pick load outs increases the strategy and fun and reduces frustration in my opinion. Did you get killed and need to make it back somewhere quick? sprint. Need to get back someplace out of reach? fly. Are you having trouble mixing it up one on one? get the drop on them with invisible. Or do you just need a second chance? shield. Oh, and using these abilities makes me feel like a bad ass.
Weapon adjustments seem spot on too, particularly the BR replacement the DMR, which seems very well balanced for the game. In halo 2 and 3 no one in there right mind would pick up an AR or SMG over the BR. But in this game the DMR’s slower fire rate and single shot (instead of triple shot) capacity really make it only useful from mid to long range (oh and i think it handles really well too).
Most important of all though is the fact that the game feels fun again. The loadout abilities give you an advantage whenever you need it, and you never feel weak after spawning because of that fact, and also its great to be able to swiftly get back into the game with spring or jet pack.
All in all I am really liking it so far. What do you guys think?
