FF XIV

Okay, so I swore off MMOs about two years ago after playing WoW waay too much and not even enjoying it. With that said there are two MMOs on the horizon that I am actually looking forward to. Luckily I don’t think I’ll ever get as addicted to another MMO as I was with WoW. That was just plain terrible.

Anyway, lots of new FFXIV (that’s hard for me to write sometimes) info has come out recently. It looks basically like a retooling of XI which, honestly, is fine with me. Here’s the rundown for the short of time and lazy:

Five races:
Elezen (Elvaan)
Lalafell (Taru)
Hyur (Hume)
Roegadyn (Galka)
Miqo’te (Mithra)

It looks like they basically tried to make everything harder to pronounce. Exactly the same as XI though, down to Mithra only being female and Galka only being male (and, I would guess, still suck at being WHM (looking at you Morton)).

City-States:
Ul’dah
Limsa Lominsa
Gridania

This I’m a little fuzzier on their XI counterparts. I’d say Ul’dah is (..need to go look up what those pricks to the North’s place was called) Sandy, Limsa is Bastok, and Gridania is Windy. Yet without more info I’m basically basing it off the pictures. If that is the case they will be changing the cities purposes a bit since New Bastok is now a seaport. Regardless the concept art is gorgeous.

Classes:
I’m a bit hazy on this. I know that there are at least four main classes with two subs for each, so that sounds slightly different. Yet one thing, if I gather correctly, you can do now is change on the fly. Maybe not in combat, dunno, but it looks like the new Armoury system allows for changes in the field based on gear. Sounds promising.

So there’s a lot more information on the official site so go check it out. Shit I forgot I’m parked in 15 minutes……. please no ticket please no ticket.

I don’t know, i’m not really excited at all for this. It looks too similar to 11 and I don’t really enjoy mmos any more. it does look pretty though. and is it only for ps3? does any of us even have a ps3?

PS3/PC. I’m with you on generally not enjoying MMOs anymore. I think the similarity to FFXI is what I like about it, but I dunno if it’ll be different enough / interesting enough to warrant playing an MMO for. TOR is the other one that I’m looking at. I’d like something to play every now and again where we can all game together again. TOR with its micro transaction system seems to be the one which will ultimately win, though I’m not sure what XIVs system will be. I’m probably not playing any if they have a monthly: it breds the idea that you MUST play it or you’re losing money… terrible. I won’t be playing either if nobody else is.

reading more about ff 14s armoury system reminds me a lot of tactics which i love. Basically it looks like for final fantasy 14 there isnt a leveling system, everything is based on abilities you equip (and certain abilities require more slots then others). So it sounds like a fusion of final fantasy 9’s system where as you grew you were able to gain more ability slots, and the materia system where slot functionality was determined by the weapon you have equipped. from what i read on the official site of 14 it also looks like your character class can be changed on the fly (though probably not during combat), but it looks like they were trying to eliminate having to find a white mage, all that you need now is for one guy to switch into a white mage mode and there you go. also no character leveling translates into no experience penalties or de-leveling. and it looks like they also have a new teleporting system wherein it deals hp damage to your character so you have to rest afterward, but you can quickly and conveniently teleport all over to help you quickly reach your party members. I dont know it sounds like their fixing more or less everything i disliked about 11, though i am loath to get involved in an mmo again. i wont pay month to month and i dont have a ps3, but my interest is peaked and if you guys would play i certaintly would to (plus no leveling means brandon and ryan cant blow past everyone in character level).

Hey! I stayed with you guys in XI. It’s Dylan and Brandon we’d have to look out for. Dylan had a forty something in WoW, started over, and almost beat me to the first 60 in our group. That’s gross.

Oh, and good info there Cody. Sounds very cool. We’ll have to keep our eyes out for it (too bad no 360 release…)

If they streamline the gameplay, which I’m sure they will now that its however many years after their first game, I’ll definitely be interested. So far the information out there is pretty nonsubstantial. I’d like to see some real screenshots/uis. I wouldn’t bank on TOR being microtransaction, they haven’t officially said anything. Not that microtransaction sounds appealing in any way.

I’d say it’s pretty appealing in one very important way: it removes the sense of compulsory play which pay per month plans produce. When playing WoW you felt like you had to “get your monies worth” which meant, mainly, playing as much as possible. The more you played the better deal, right? We’re all paying a flat fee regardless of how much we play, afterall. So remove the sense of urgency, of compulsion, from the equation (i.e. microtransactions) and you have an MMO which can be played casually and even stopped without forethought. You busy for the next month or so? Don’t worry about checking your roll over day and canceling or not, just don’t play. I’d say that’s very appealing.

I’d think our only fear from microtransaction should be gone by now: the quality of this game is going to be phenomenal regardless of the pay system they implement. If the quality is great then there isn’t anything inherently negative about microtransaction to make them unappealing.

so it looks like square is planning an xbox release but its going to be sometime after the playstation 3 and pc release. What’s the hold up? Currently square is locked in negotiations with microsoft about how to make the game work with LIVE. The issue is that normally a LIVE game doesnt require additional fees but almost all MMO’s do (or at least thats what i think it is from the info given). They let them do that with 11, but maybe microsoft doesnt want us to pay an additional fee for 14? technically it does break the xbox live rulebook.

That might be it. I was thinking it was because of Microsoft’s closed network. Square obviously doesn’t want two FF networks. But what’s weird is that either way they’ve done it before with 11, so why the problem now?

hmm i dont know. sounds like someone’s being a hard ass. Here’s one thing i know for sure: There is no way that microsoft will let a franchise as a big as FF have an exclusive game with sony if they can possibly avoid it. Everyone knows that microsoft loves nothing more than stealing formerly exclusive franchises from playstation.
