Documentary Style?

Just had the chance to watch the original grunion runners for the first time in a long time and it still made me laugh out loud by myself in my room. I think the sequel should be either done documentary style, or at the very least quasi documentary style (like the life aquatic). I think the story should be simplified (i realized now after watching it again that the story for jose’s gold we have going is gonna turn into the matrix reloaded of sequels, as in totally untrue to the original and over the top). Here’s my first idea: A documentary following the grunion runners were scott admits to the team that they are in fact bankrupt and a trek through the wilderness to find the legendary jose’s gold (possibly with documentary interview style cutbacks to how it was that all the money was lost in the first place). Thus it would turn into sort of a journey film, like remember that movie alaska we always had to watch in school with the two kids trying to find there dad in a plane crash and they make friends with a polar bear? Something like that fused with the life aquatic/best in show stuff that we had done before.

That’s kinda what I was thinking, but I didn’t want to be dismissive of the work you’d already put into it. If it’s going to be different and distinct, that’s fine, we just need to come at it like that. If it’s going to be similar to the first, we can do that two. I don’t think the idea of a sequel in a very different style and genre is necessarily a bad idea, but it just needs a different approach.

Also, I remember seeing Alaska at the morro bay theater with your family in 3rd grade. We also saw Shawn Denny and his family at the theater.

Wow thats quite a memory. But ya i think its for the best. I still think the footage me brandon eric and billy did is funny, but its funny on its own terms and not really at all about what grunion runners was about. Anyway i think if we keep the old style, and just change the topic of the documentary to something new then it will work just fine (like how in life aquatic his first movie at the begining is a documentary straight up but the next one is a revenge journey). I think it simplifies things and will allow us to write our jokes on the fly and keep the spontaneity of the first film intact. And even if their is no gold at the end, i like the idea of a man going out into the woods and learning something about himself, coming down from the mountain with some truth or something like that. So in that sense i think it would be sort of a funny twist to have the mostly urban runners go on a trek into the woods. (perhaps only like eric or dylan know they are going after gold and to convince everyone to come they tell the other runners that their is a special freshwater grunion or something out at a lake in the woods that will make them famous which is a lie, but then the gold turns out to be not real and they do find a new grunion species or something). So like when everything seems bleakest and the secret is revealed that their acutally looking for gold and not a grunion and there is like a devision in the group, they find the legendary grunion and are all brought together as friends even closer than they were before. Just a thought.

I say the Grunion we find is a ridiculously large animatronic fish that takes like four people to operate…. it could be the grunion king or something… and I really don’t care if we drop the footage we have, I think i was too worried about getting filming done before break was over that I didn’t plan it very well

ya to be perfectly honest all i was trying to do was get all of the footage of billy covered to fill plot holes.

you know, i basically love the new idea. It just makes alot more sense, and I think the humor will be more in line with the first movie. Im down to help in any way i can.

Oh! and if they are in the woods we can have the ninja in almost every single scene like creeping tree to tree behind the runners as to not be seen, or some sort of thing like that only more to the point of only billy seeing him.

i still think we should involve the footage of billy being dragged though.

At the very least we can have someone say: “hey scott do you remember when claernce got stuck in that tree?” and then we cut to eric pulling billy out of the tree. lol.

Oh i think it would be funny if while the ninja is creeping one time he just straight falls on his face or something right in the middle of the runners and no one sees him.

Sorry but i’m just gonna strait up keep posting ideas so ya’ll can see them. During an interview portion scott talks about how Clarence died in between the making of the first film and the second, and then we show the log falling off of the pier footage with a caption at the bottom saying “Recreation of Events: Do not attempt.”
